VIEW: 18-32: Costly Construction Failures

COSTLY CONSTRUCTION FAILURES Week of 2018/08/06
It was somewhat bemusing, and concerning to read a headline in
the July 25 daily paper that carried the headline: "Segments of Cimarron
buckle from extreme heat". The story was datelined 'Oklahoma City' and
credited to Barbara Hoberock of the Tulsa World, so she must be the
Capitol reporteret. The story begins by saying "Extremely hot temperatures
have caused portions of the Cimarron Turnpike to buckle, the Oklahoma
Turnpike Authority was told Tuesday".
For those not familiar with Oklahoma highways, there are a number
of
turnpikes that have been built since the first, 'Turner Turnpike' was opened
in the 1950s, to my recollection. The total 'lane miles' is in the several
thousand, a 'lane mile' is one lane of pavement for one mile thus a four
lane
100 mile highway contains 400 'lane miles' of road and in my mind paved
shoulders would be added.
This caught my engineering attention since there are older
highways that do
not seem to have that trouble and have lived through much higher
temperatures,
in the 'dust bowl' era of the 1930s. In fact, it is in my memory of driving
on a
section of old US 66 Southwest of Stroud that my eyes had witnessed being
built in the 1930s with concrete. One difference was that the concrete was
being mixed 'on site' by a self propelled mixer. It was astounding to feel
the
road that old to be much smoother than the Turner Turnpike we departed at
Stroud!! If memory serves correct, U.S. 66 was the first highway in the
nation to
be fully paved across any state and that was Oklahoma.
In any event the story struck me as furnishing evidence that
something is
missing in the construction of highways in the recent 50 years or so.
Admittedly trucks are much heavier, but the roads should be constructed so
as
to carry the loads.
Most of the non-toll roads in Oklahoma currently are in poor
condition,
that is something less than 'velvet rides'. In the recent Gubernatorial
Primary
one candidate stressed heavily that he would 'remove the tolls' to allow and
encourage more business along the roads. There was not a time that I was
able
to pose the question "without the tolls how could they be maintained, since
the non-
toll roads are not kept up to interstate condition now?" Neither did anyone
else to
my knowledge.
Another question arises that should be asked to the highway
officials and
engineers is: "If you cannot afford to build roads well enough to withstand
the
use, how can you afford to rebuild, repair, or replace them?" It should be
noted that major airport runways handling multi-hundred thousand pound
aircraft landing at over 150 miles per hour seem to last far much longer,
but the
paving is as thick as 36" in some, particularly military and international
flight
airports. Also the sub-base for the paving must be well laid and packed in
order
to prevent cracking and buckling under stress of weight and weather.
It has been noted that in recent decades the Turnpike Authority
has
begun using asphalt as an overlay or replacement paving, which in my
engineering
opinion is more like using a 'band-aid'. Given the normal summer heat in
Oklahoma that is not the best material for the job. It seems that well over
50
years ago a certain powerful politician was able to achieve rules requiring
the use
of asphalt for road paving. It is known to 'rut and ripple' under loads no
heavier than a loaded pick-up when stopping or just repeated traffic in the
Summer heat.
In short, if roads are built right, with adequate solid base and
drainage and
then maintained properly they should stay in useable condign for many more
years than now experienced. Another weather related detiorating practice is
the
use of SALT in winter months, as it will react adversely with the concrete
and then
will rust the reinforcing rods to destruction. There are other materials
that will be
more effective melters and will not rust the vehicles using the roads and
streets.
Also I have not heard of the environment organizations ever raising
a fuss
over the use of salt for roads like they do for other uses. Maybe those
individuals
feel it is more important to them to have the roads salted for their
convenience
than protect the waterways.
In any event all the extra repair/replacement comes at major extra
expense and thus tax increases and it is my opnion that we are already
overtaxed,
particularly those of us in the lower income levels!!

VIEW FROM HERE
By Bob McDowell (Born Neil Carson) Number 18-31
INCARCERATION THE ANSWER? Week of 2018/07/30
More and more we see and hear those on the Left (C/S) in leadership
positions attempting to incite violence and even murder (assassination) of
PRESDT-45. In past times of more 'rule of law' in government such actions
and proclamations would have brought immediate response by the Secret
Service arm of the Treasury Department followed by jailing pending a trial.
Even today if a conservative or anyone registered to vote as "Republican"
stooped to such doings those on the left would be, violently if necessary,
demanding that they be taken off the streets or even so far as to demand a
"necktie party" (lynch mob - the complete democracy).
Those of us of more common sense frame of mind are appalled at the
lengths those individuals will descend to in expressing their emotions. The
question becomes: 'how did this come about?' and the answer is actually
fairly obvious but several faceted. It seems to me that the beginnings go
back to the mid-1910s with the rise of one 'Col. House', an avowed
Communist, in the White House of President Woodrow Wilson, who had
reportedly suffered a debilitating stroke. Reports indicate it was he who
pushed the adoption of Amendment XVI which permitted the imposition
of the Income Tax that has become so intrusive and abusive. A steeply
graduated income tax was one of the 'prime necessities' for Communism
put forth by Karl Marx.
As time went on, the abusiveness of those dedicated to C/S gained
momentum with the invasion of such people into the education system.
This was first into the Journalism and Education colleges of universities.
Thus years of indoctrinated graduates of those schools have been able to
infect those who come in contact with them with their beliefs. And by
invading the ranks of those teaching, at all levels from kindergarten up,
they have sent into society generations of misguided subjects to blindly
carry out their agenda. As these indoctrinated students graduate into
adult society they remain sympathetic to their brainwashing and so tend
to steer their children into the same mentality. Thus the infection is able
to continue spreading. When the turn to violence, the police need to be
more aggressive in shutting them down and into jail!!
Add to that the economic downturns encouraged, if not actually
instituted, by those types gaining power by election, appointment, or
hiring being able to bring changes to the 'rules' in the form of bureaucratic
instituted regulations, or legislative enacted laws, that tend to depress the
economy, even to recession. With that the reduction in income, or even
employment, serves to further incite a dislike with conditions. Having
come so far along the path to socialism over several decades, we must
accept that a full return to overall well being and normalcy will take some
time.
However, it must be admitted, even though those on the left won't,
that PRESDT-45 has made very real progress in his efforts to turn things
around. Of course the major nationwide media people are embedded in
the ranks of the socialists and are in full agreement with the "Never
Trumpers". As a result the good things that have happened are rarely, if
ever, carried as news. Other than the complete dictator nations with
propaganda ministries there has never been such falsification and
repression of full stories in the World.
Those in opposition to his efforts continually rail, loudly and
profanely, against his even having any sort of communication with those
foreign leaders/rulers who presently oppose us. Of course a failure to
communicate in any way is the path to, ultimately, a shooting war with the
ensuing damage and death to so many, whether involved or not. In his
recent meeting with North Korea dictator Kim it looked to me like
PRESDT-45 was treating him like a misguided son and attempting to
correct his wrong direction. On his part Kim appeared, from pictures and
videos, to be taking it all in and maybe also to heart. Any appearances to
the contrary on his return home could be the result of the miliary leaders
efforts to keep their situation intact, which is understandable, since they
grew up in the situation they have and do not really know or understand
any other. Kim seemed very impressed with the equipment present to be
used by our personnel as much more desirable than his own.
In my opinion it is necessary for us who revere the Constitution and
freedoms guaranteed by it to stay committed and, as done by me in disgust,
turn off the electronic information showing the violence and incivility so
prevalent from the left. If confronted by them it seems best to just laugh at
them instead of attempting to argue. That will cause them to become
increasingly frustrated and, as usual, have no logical argument. Just
remember from them it is probably all lies anyway!!

Fw: A true story that should never be forgotten

I remember the mission well, how proud we were at home. I, as a pilot, have often
wondered if they were taught the nuances of 'mixture leaning' which if used would have
extended their range substantially. Then I was told, a decade or so back, that the engines
had 'auto-lean' and so would lean automatically, but I question that as it may not have
been developed. Bob

This is a good reminder why the WWII generation was considered
the greatest on all times. Ffed
This is interesting, I know you will enjoy. Seems Impossible
Carefully study this artwork. Then, read what we did.
Not only is the picture awesome, but so are the statistics!

During the 3-1/2 years of World War II that started with the Japanese bombing of Pearl
Harbor in December of 1941 and ended with the surrender of Germany and Japan in 1945, "We the
People of the U.S.A." produced the following:
22 aircraft carriers
8 battleships
48 cruisers
349 destroyers
420 destroyer escorts
203 submarines
34 million tons of merchant ships
100,000 fighter aircraft
98,000 bombers
24,000 transport aircraft
58,000 training aircraft
93,000 tanks
257,000 artillery pieces
105,000 mortars
3,000,000 machine guns and
2,500,000 military trucks
We put 16.1 million men in uniform in the various armed services, invaded Africa,
invaded Sicily and Italy, won the battle for the Atlantic, planned and executed D-Day, marched
across the Pacific and Europe, developed the atomic bomb and, ultimately, conquered Japan and
Germany.
It's amazing what America did in those days. Many of you already know the story,
here is the update.
THE FINAL TOAST
The text below references the movie "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo." There is a second film made
in 1944 that details the "show" trials of the 11 airmen that were captured & tortured by the
Japanese titled "The Purple Heart."
Three were executed as war criminals, a fourth died in captivity.
The FINAL TOAST! They bombed Tokyo 73 years ago.
They once were among the most universally admired and revered men in the United States
.. There were 80 of the Raiders in April 1942, when they carried out one of the most courageous
and heart-stirring military operations in this nation's history. The mere mention of their
unit's name, in those years, would bring tears to the eyes of grateful Americans. Now only
four survive.
After Japan 's sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, with the United States reeling and
wounded, something dramatic was needed to turn the war effort around. Even though there were
no friendly airfields close enough to Japan for the United States to launch a retaliation, a
daring plan was devised. Sixteen B-25s were modified so that they could take off from the deck
of an aircraft carrier. This had never before been tried -- sending such big, heavy bombers
from a carrier.
The 16 five-man crews, under the command of Lt. Col. James Doolittle, who himself flew
the lead plane off the USS Hornet, knew that they would not be able to return to the
carrier. ….. They would have to hit Japan and then hope to make it to China for a safe landing.
But on the day of the raid, the Japanese military caught wind of the plan. (We were told a
Japanese fishing boat had 'probably' seen the fleet and might have been able to radio it's
position, size, and, course before being sunk by gunfire). The Raiders were told that they
would have to take off from much farther out in the Pacific Ocean than they had counted on.
They were told that because of this they would not have enough fuel to make it to safety. And
those men went anyway!!
They bombed Tokyo and then flew as far as they could. Four planes crash-landed; 11
more crews bailed out and three of the Raiders died. Eight more were captured; three were
executed. Another died of starvation in a Japanese prison camp. One crew made it to Russia .
The Doolittle Raiders sent a message from the United States to its enemies, and to the
rest of the world: We will fight. And, no matter what it takes, we will win. Of the 80
Raiders, 62 survived the war. They were celebrated as national heroes, models of bravery.
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer produced a motion picture based on the raid; "Thirty Seconds Over
Tokyo,", starring Spencer Tracy and Van Johnson, was a patriotic and emotional box-office hit,
and the phrase became part of the national lexicon. In the movie-theater previews for the
film, MGM proclaimed that it was presenting the story........ "with supreme pride."

Beginning in 1946, the surviving Raiders have held a reunion each April, to commemorate
the mission. The reunion is in a different city each year. In 1959, the city of Tucson ,
Arizona , as a gesture of respect and gratitude, presented the Doolittle Raiders with a set of
80 silver goblets. Each goblet was engraved with the name of a Raider. Every year, a wooden
display case bearing all 80 goblets is transported to the reunion city. Each time a Raider
passes away, his goblet is turned upside down in the case at the next reunion, as his old
friends bear solemn witness. Also in the wooden case is a bottle of 1896 Hennessy Very Special
cognac. The year is not happenstance: 1896 was when Jimmy Doolittle was born.
There has always been a plan: When there are only two surviving Raiders, they would
open the bottle, at last drink from it, and toast their comrades who preceded them in death.
As 2013 began, there were five living Raiders; then, in February, Tom Griffin passed away at
age 96. What a man he was. After bailing out of his plane over a mountainous Chinese forest
after the Tokyo raid, he became ill with malaria, and almost died. When he recovered, he was
sent to Europe to fly more combat missions. He was shot down, captured, and spent 22 months in
a German prisoner of war camp.
The selflessness of these men, the sheer guts ... There was a passage in the Cincinnati
Enquirer obituary for Mr. Griffin that, on the surface, had nothing to do with the war, but
that was emblematic of the depth of his sense of duty and devotion: "When his wife became ill
and needed to go into a nursing home, he visited her every day. He walked from his house to the
nursing home, fed his wife, and at the end of the day brought home her clothes. At night, he
washed and ironed her clothes. Then he walked them up to her room the next morning. He did that
for three years until her death in 2005."
So now, out of the original 80, only four Raiders remain: Dick Cole (Doolittle's
co-pilot on the Tokyo raid), Robert Hite, Edward Saylor and David Thatcher. All are in their
90s. They have decided that there are too few of them for the public reunions to continue. The
events in Fort Walton Beach marked the end. It has come full circle;
Florida 's nearby Eglin Field was where the Raiders trained in secrecy for the Tokyo mission.
The town planned to do all it can to honor the men: a six-day celebration of their valor,
including luncheons, a dinner and a parade.
Do the men ever wonder if those of us for whom they helped save the Country have tended
to it in a way that is worthy of their sacrifice? They don't talk about that, at least not
around other people. But if you find yourself near Fort Walton Beach this week, and if you
should encounter any of the Raiders, you might want to offer them a word of thanks. I can tell
you from first hand observation that they appreciate hearing that they are remembered.
The men have decided that after this final public reunion they will wait until a later date --
sometime this year -- to get together once more, informally and in absolute privacy. That is
when they will open the bottle of brandy. The years are flowing by too swiftly now; they are
not going to wait until there are only two of them.
They will fill the four remaining upturned goblets. And raise them in a toast to those
who are gone.

Their 70th Anniversary Photo (Did not show up on my unit)

PLEASE SEND THIS ON TO EVERYONE IN YOUR ADDRESS BOOK, ESPECIALLY TO THOSE WHO WERE TOO
YOUNG TO KNOW ABOUT THESE BRAVE HEROES.
MAY GOD BLESS THEM ALL!

Again, good reminder and infomation for us all!! And, a forward was
recently received titled: "Put Pork on your Fork". It was about two or three
immigrent Muslim families in a Canadian city suburb demanded that there be
no more pork on the school menues. I haven't heard of any Jews making
the same or similar demands here, and pork is forbidden for them!!!

A Jewish Boycott
Some time ago, Iran's Supreme Leader Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei
urged the Muslim World to boycott anything and everything that originates
with the Jewish people.
In response, Meyer M. Treinkman, a pharmacist, out of the kindness
of his heart, offered to assist them in their boycott as follows:
"Any Muslim who has Syphilis must not be cured by Salvarsan
discovered by a Jew, Dr. Ehrlich. He should not even try to find out
whether he has Syphilis, because the Wasserman Test is the discovery of a
Jew. If a Muslim suspects that he has Gonorrhea, he must not seek
diagnosis, because he will be using the method of a Jew named Neissner.
"A Muslim who has heart disease must not use Digitalis, a discovery
by a Jew, Ludwig Traube.
Should he suffer with a toothache, he must not use Novocaine, a
discovery of the Jews, Widal and Weil.
If a Muslim has Diabetes, he must not use Insulin, the result of
research by Minkowsky, a Jew. If one has a headache, he must shun
Pyramidon and Antypyrin, due to the Jews, Spiro and Ellege.
Muslims with convulsions must put up with them because it was a
Jew, Oscar Leibreich, who proposed the use of Chloral Hydrate.
Arabs must do likewise with their psychic ailments because Freud,
father of psychoanalysis, was a Jew.
Should a Muslim child get Diphtheria, he must refrain from the
"Schick" reaction which was invented by the Jew, Bella Schick.
"Muslims should be ready to die in great numbers and must not
permit treatment of ear and brain damage, work of Jewish Nobel Prize
winner, Robert Baram.
"They should continue to die or remain crippled by Infantile
Paralysis because the discoverer of the anti-polio vaccine is a Jew,
Jonas Salk.
"Muslims must refuse to use Streptomycin and continue to die of
Tuberculosis because a Jew, Zalman Waxman, invented the wonder
drug against this killing disease.
"Muslim doctors must discard all discoveries and improvements
by dermatologist Judas Sehn Benedict, or the lung specialist, Frawnkel,
and of many other world renowned Jewish scientists and medical experts.
"In short, good and loyal Muslims properly and fittingly should
remain afflicted with Syphilis, Gonorrhea, Heart Disease, Headaches,
Typhus, Diabetes, Mental Disorders, Polio Convulsions and Tuberculosis
and be proud to obey the Islamic boycott.."
"Oh, and by the way, don't call for a doctor on your cell phone
because the cell phone was invented in Israel by Jewish engineer Martin
"Marty" Cooper.

Meanwhile I ask, what medical contributions to the world have the
Muslims made?"
The Global Islamic population is approximately 1,200,000,000;
that is ONE BILLION TWO HUNDRED MILLION or 20% of the world's population.

The Jews are NOT promoting brainwashing children in military training
camps, teaching them how to blow themselves up and cause maximum deaths
of Jews and other non-Muslims.
The Jews don't hijack planes, nor kill athletes at the Olympics, or blow
themselves up in German restaurants.
There is NOT one single Jew who has destroyed a church..
There is NOT a single Jew who protests by killing people. The Jews
don't traffic slaves, nor have leaders calling for Jihad and death to all the Infidels.
Perhaps the world's Muslims should consider investing more in standard
education and less in blaming the Jews for all their problems.
Muslims must ask 'what can they do for humankind' before they demand
that humankind respects them.
Regardless of your feelings about the crisis between Israel and the
Palestinians and Arab neighbors, even if you believe there is more culpability
on Israel 's part, the following two sentences really say it all:

'If the Arabs put down their weapons today, there would be no more
violence. If the Jews put down their weapons today, there would be no
more Israel."
Benjamin Netanyahu: General Eisenhower warned us. It is a matter
of history that when the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces,
General Dwight Eisenhower, found the victims of the death camps he
ordered all possible photographs to be taken, and for the German
people from surrounding villages to be ushered through the camps and
even made to bury the dead.
He did this because he said in words to this effect: 'Get it all on
record now - get the films - get the witnesses - because somewhere
down the road of history some bastard will get up and say that this
never happened'
Recently, the UK debated whether to remove The Holocaust
from its school curriculum because it 'offends' the Muslim population
which claims it never occurred.
It is not removed as yet. However, this is a frightening portent of
the fear that is gripping the world and how easily each country is giving into it.
It is now more than 65 years after the Second World War in Europe ended.
Now, more than ever, with Iran, among others, claiming the Holocaust
to be 'a myth,' it is imperative to make sure the world never forgets.

This e-mail is intended to reach 400 million people. Be a link in the
memorial chain and help distribute this around the world.

How many years will it be before the attack on the World Trade
Center 'NEVER HAPPENED' because it offends some Muslim in the
United States?

VIEW: 18-28: After OK Primary Thoughts

VIEW FROM HERE
By Bob McDowell (Born Neil Carson) Number 18-28
AFTER OK PRIMARY THOUGHTS Week of 2018/07/09
Now that the Oklahoma primary elections are over and, except for a few
races, we enter into the 'run-off ' era ending in August we hopefully will be
relieved of the barrage of , often nasty, radio, TV, and trash mail request for
out vote or usually false claims against one of the contestants. My memory of
elections dating back to the election of 1932 when Governor of New York
managed to oust an incumbent President, named Hoover, has seen not one so
filled with false claims and nastiness, including photo shopped pictures to
falsely depict a candidate.
Most of those were put forth by the so-called 'dark money committees'
supporting another candidate. Usually these candidates are political unknowns
recruited by special interest groups such as the OEA and NEA (teachers
unions) or individuals with a personal grudge against another office holder. It
is a relief to me to be free of those plus the multitude of 'robo-calls' for the
same purpose and mostly on my cell phone, but also serving to interrupt my
positive efforts.
Turning from objections, there should be some suggestions. It seems to
me that the "Ethics Commission" should establish rules, and then enforce them
with real penalties, requiring that ALL political advertisements clearly disclose
the entity putting them out together with a person's name, address, and
electronic means of contact. Some of the most onerous post cards carried no
visible disclosure, as is supposedly required by law or regulations. If such
regulations are already established, then the commission is not meeting the
responsibility and staff should be replaced with ones that will. Indeed, there
should be severe penalties for any false statement advertising. Personally, it
is my policy to not vote for candidates whose campaign resorts to such tactics.
Also, it should be required that the "campaign consultant", if one is retained,
should be identified, possibly stated with the finance reports.
On a more pleasant note, especially for the citizens, was the
announcement a couple of days after the election that the U.S. Supreme
Court had ruled in a case, 5 to 4, that no government employee may be
required to join a union as a condition of employment, nor should the
government withhold union dues for any such. And the decision included
public schools in the requirement. It is my understanding that the decision
also rejected the withholding of dues, and forwarding to unions, of dues
amounts for non-members. That this was being done extensively against
non-members was surprising to me and is, in my opinion, reprehensible.
This seems to me to be a great boon for employees. Many believe the
unions then use this "windfall" source of funds to finance campaigns and
obtain favors with Democrats but proof has not been available to me.
Secondly, a news announcement arrived that Mr. Justice Kennedy
of the Supreme Court announced his retirement effective the end of July.
Thus it will enable PRESDT-45 to nominate another replacement. The
nomination does not guarantee that the Senate will act promptly to
investigate and vote on approving the candidate. Democrat leadership
has already stated intention to stall the vote until at least after the
November election, hoping to gain some seats in the Senate to prevent
whoever is nominated. Dirty politics!!
Also a State Question was passed labeled "Medical Marihuana"
which actually will allow "recreational" use of the plant. Reports are
surfacing that there were a least 40,000 more votes cast on this than
on the rest of the ballot, and that many young voters would not even
take the 'yellow' ballot containing the office candidates.
One of my children living in Colorado has told me that the
problem of "hit and run" incidents has increased substantially there
since the plants use for 'recreational use was permitted. Also that a
large percentage of those involved in these are here illegally. And
many Democrat leaders supported this change as well as a few
misguided with an "R" behind their name. All this puts the rest of us
in increased danger. There are derivatives of the plant that have no
habit forming properties and have some very beneficial properties
for certain conditions. Fortunately, this was passed as a "statute"
and so can be amended by the Legislature. It might be noted that
all this is in violation of Federal law and could put some State
funding in jeopardy, should the DOJ decide to enforce it!!
In my opinion, this was a badly and hurriedly written proposal,
perhaps deliberately, and catered to those mostly in younger
generations. Time will tell just how bad it will be.

Subject: Fwd: A minute with GOD

I LOVE THE OPENING SENTENCE:
With what is going on in the world these days, Heaven could end up a ghost town.

My name is GOD. You hardly have time for Me. I love you and will always
bless you. I am always with you. I need you to spend 60 seconds of your time with
Me today.
Don't pray, just praise. Today I want this message to go across the world
before midnight. Will you help?

Please do not delete it and I'll help you with something that you are in need of.

Just dare Me! A blessing is coming your way.
Please drop everything and pass it on.
Why are prayers getting smaller, but bars and clubs are expanding?
Why is it so easy to worship a celebrity, but very difficult to engage with God?
Think about it, are you going to forward this or are you going to ignore it
because you think you will get laughed at?
GOD said if you deny me in front of your friends, I will deny you on the Day
of Judgment.

When one door closes, God opens two.

If GOD has opened doors for you, send this message to everyone...

Forward if God's been good To you.

VIEW FROM HERE
By Bob McDowell (Born Neil Carson) Number 18-25
PRIMARY ELECTION COMING Week of 2018/06/18
This being an even numbered year, and not a 'leap year', we are
faced with the 'mid-term' election season. Some states are already having,
or have had, primaries while we here in Oklahoma will have our primary
on June 26. This date being the fourth Tuesday tended to throw me a
curve since elections have historically been on the first Tuesday, or first
Tuesday after the first Monday.
Campaigns have been if full swing from Congress on down to the
County level. Here in Tulsa we are having an 'open seat' for the District
One Congress seat because Cong. Bridenstine had self-term limited to
three terms, and kept his word. In the meantime PRESDT-45
nominated him to head up the NASA and after months of Senate
minority delay tactics past year end and re-nominated he was finally seated,
so the seat is already open with a number of candidates seeking election.
At the State level, it seems that all seats are up for election,
except for half of the 48 Senate and two of the three Corporation
Commission seats. Things have been rather lively for some time. Some
rather nasty radio campaign commercials have cropped up, noticeable
in the primary race for the Republican nomination for Attorney General.
Frankly, when such a thing happens it serves as a 'turn-off' for me, and
a number of those in my circle of friends, towards the perpetrators of
such. It indicates to me that those behind such tactics are more of the
C/S mentality and will not receive my vote.
Admittedly in some cases it is the retained 'campaign advisor' who
comes up with these nasty, and all too often false, attacks. But it is the
candidate and closest 'amateur' advisors who succumb to the sales pitch
of the 'professional' that resorts to such tactics. Unfortunately such
methods have caused all too many very honest and qualified individuals
to decide to sit on the sidelines and thus reduce the choices we voters
might have.
Another such tactic is the "whisper campaign" where a, usually
false, accusation is sent from person to person in such a way that the
victim might be unaware of its existence until too close to the election
day to mount a refutation. In my own personal experience of being a
candidate none of the above was ever known to me to be used. In fact
in my 1996 race for State Senate a friendly relationship was maintained
with my incumbent opponent, much to the consternation of members of
his party from the "swamp" in Oklahoma City who observed it. That is
the way it should be!!
In the end, we should exert every effort to become fully informed on
every candidate and every issue before casting our ballot. If we do not
have adequate information to make a decision, then the vote on that race
or issue should be withheld, in my opinion, because a guess will make the
decision a 50% probability of being the wrong one, to the detriment of
the government and population.
The demonstrated outright hatred expressed against PRESDT-45 in
the last Presidential race, and continuing today, sadly in some cases from
within his own party, in my opinion comes from those who may have never
been able to accept things going not their preferred way. It is too bad that
such individuals have failed to complete the 'growing up' process and still
are acting like the 'spoiled brats' they seem to be. If the party officials
were more mature and with more dedication to the original written
principals of the respective party they would move to correct those who
violate the rules of polite society and even, if necessary, move to remove
them from the ballot or publicly disavow their candidacy.
There was an old movie titled "The Farmer's Daughter in which
party officials proceeded to do just that against their own candidate
when it was found he had the wrong affiliation outside the party. As usual
in those days there were a number of major stars involved.

VIEW: 18-35: Questionable Party Leadership

VIEW FROM HERE
By Bob McDowell (Born Neil Carson) Number 18-35
QUESTIONABLE PARTY LEADERSHIP Week of 2018/08/27
Recently I have remarked about the annual Oklahoma Constitution report on
the voting records of every member of the State Legislature and bewailed the
continuing low Conservative voting average as a group.
On rummaging through some older papers I found one titled "RINOing
Republicans in Name Only" authored it showed by "Chuck Muth" in 2009. Mr.
Muth is not known by or to me, so corroborating the story has not been possible for
me. However the sender was known to me and thus it was accepted.
In brief summary the story is about the Tennessee House Of Representatives
having gained a Republican majority in the 2008 election for the first time since 1868,
after the 'Civil' War. The Caucus had hopes of electing a true Conservative to be
speaker and had him chosen. Then, it said, on January 13, 2009 it developed that
one of their number had conspired with the Democrat minority to unanimously vote
for him, which with his vote assured his election. He promptly appointed Democrats
as chairmen of half of the committees and thus thwarted the programs for which the
majority was elected.
The choice part is that the Party Central Committee met and formally declared
the miscreant to be a RINO and Resolved that He be
1. "forever banned from seeking elective office in the State as a Republican
2. All media outlets in the State requested to cease referring to him as a
Republican
3. He receive no support, endorsements, or financial backing by Party affiliates.
Space does not allow showing the entire story as received, but the author allows
that the Party had every right to do this since there is a "Constitutionally protected right
of Freedom of Association" and the Party Committee is the official governing body of
the Party.
Where is this leading? Well, in 2006 when the "Tulsa Area Republican
Assembly", or TARA, chapter of the Oklahoma Republican Assembly was chartered,
I, as founding president, was informed that one of our duties was to declare such
wayward individuals to be RINO's and notify State and its other chapters and also
National to notify all the other States of these declarations. There was no directive
that such declarations be distributed to the media in general, nor was there a prohibition
from doing so. The Republican Assembly and chapters is not to be 'official' parts of
the Party so that another mandate could be carried out. That is to issue official
endorsements of candidates in primary/run-off elections and distribute the decision
results to news outlets. That continues to be done, but it takes a 70% vote to make
an endorsement.
In the current election series, as well as past ones for some years, it seems to
me that the Party officials have bent too far back to observe the non-endorse rule.
In my opinion it should be incumbent on Party officials, as well as major supporters,
to be pro-active in preventing the campaigns from becoming trashy as has been for
the last few elections. There is no place in the Republican Party for 'politics of
personal destruction' to be so public or extensive and Party officials, in particular,
should take an active part in attempting to tone down, or terminate, such carrying on.
That includes telling candidates to cease and desist. Further, when a candidate
declines to moderate and be honest and truthful, the Party officials should repudiate
same publicly!!
In the cases where the source of the problem is one of the 'Professional
Campaign Advisors' known to commonly resort to such tactics, it would be well
for the Party officials to publicly repudiate and publicize the name of the offending
entity. When it comes from one of the "Dark Money" organizations, the same
should be the case and the candidate benefitting should repudiate the source also.
Also, the address, city, telephone, and management names, as well as major
sources of their donations should be disclosed, if possible. These suggestions,
if acted upon, might go a long way to cleaning up and making campaigns more
gentile and civil.
Of course, none of this will happen if we, the people, don't rise up and
raise a fuss publicly. Also it is my policy to refuse to vote for a candidate
following that course of campaign action. If a few of those ended up losing by
a substantial amount, we might see a major reduction in the presence.
We are a nation built on civility and individuality, it is time that the ways
that made us great were returned to our general conduct. PRESDT-45 seems
to be willing to take them on!!

VIEW FROM HERE
By Bob McDowell (Born Neil Carson) Number 18-21
SANCTUARY PUSH BACK? Week of 2018/05/21
It seems that there might be developing a reactionary push-back against
the proliferated 'sanctuary' city, county, state movement at long last. There
have been numerous reports of counties and cities in California rejecting the
idea of being a 'sanctuary' for those who have illegally 'invaded' the USA.
There this has even expanded, reports have stated, to a move to divide the
state into three separate states, leaving those socialist oriented in the center and
the North and South as separate new states. If done, the major change we
would see would be the addition of four US Senator seats, with each new state
having the Constitutional two.
Also, there have been earlier reports of a move in Illinois to separate out
Cook County, that is Chicago, into another state, but so far no word of action
has been received. That would, if done, have the effect of two Senators (always
Democrat as now) from there and two new ones, probably Republican, from the
remaining State of Illinois.
But hold the phone. It is my understanding that ONLY the State of Texas
can do that without an act of Congress. Texas was a nation when it decided,
with treaty, to become a state. In the treaty, in my understanding, Texas has the
right, on its own volition, of two options. It can just decide to leave and again
become an independent nation, or it can remain in the USA and divide itself into
as many as, the story goes, five individual states. Again this would result in eight
added Senators, which likely would become Republican, with the original two,
in the C/S areas, becoming Democrat.
Frankly it boggles my mind how those officials who insist on giving many of
the rights and privileges of citizenship to people who have deliberately violated
our laws by 'invading' our national property. In addition they grant them welfare,
education, and other 'rights' guaranteed by the Constitution to those who have
citizenship. In effect, these officials are encouraging lawlessness, which engenders
additional law breaking, including murder, rape, and burglary. In my opinion
elected, appointed, and employed officials at any level of government who violate
the oath of office should be summarily removed from office and prohibited from
ever holding another, perhaps even jail time.
Unfortunately, that last is not likely to occur until large numbers of those
type people holding Federal and lower judgeships are removed from the bench.
In some cases all it would take is for the voters to become informed and vote those
out. In others, such as 'like appointed' Federal judges, it will take Congressional
impeachment action to effect removal of corrupt occupants. Thus it is obvious that
the "Swamp" is far larger than envisioned by PRESDT-45, and in this case beyond
his authority.
On the brighter side, the Oklahoma Legislature in the last session, just ended,
passed and the Governor signed into law, a bill authorizing legal gun owners the right
to consider their church of membership as a second home and thus to carry when
there. In at least one case in Tulsa County my informant stated that the pastor had
announced recently words to the effect that there were two non-uniformed security
individuals in addition to those uniformed present. He went on, I was told, to state
that if members were armed it would do well to so inform the uniformed guards so
that they could inform the others just who was in case there was an incident. Seems
like a good idea to me.
Also two, or more governments can play the 'sanctuary' game. A small AP
story in the daily paper of May 7 stated that "several rural Illinois counties have taken
a stand for gun rights" by becoming 'sanctuary' counties for gun owners. The story
stated that at least five counties have adopted resolutions to be "Sanctuary Counties".
The county board chairman stated, it said, that at least 20 Illinois counties and officials
in Oregon and Washington have requested copies. Hear, Hear!

VIEW: 18-34: Run-Off Election Thoughts

VIEW FROM HERE
By Bob McDowell (Born Neil Carson)
Number 18-34
RUN-OFF ELECTION THOUGHTS Week of 2018/08/20
In late July my absentee ballots for the August 28 'run-off'
election arrived in
the mail. This time it contained two separate ballots, one for the office
campaigns
and another for a city bond issue vote. These always tend to put me on guard
because they usually mean an increase in taxes at the local level. The bond
issue
was multi-faceted and consisted of six separate bond issues, another large
red flag.
It has been my practice since January of 1948, when education caused
me
to transfer from the University of Tulsa to Oklahoma in Norman, to continue
my
registration at my parents' home in Tulsa. This continued through
graduation, jobs
in Colorado, Wyoming, Oklahoma City, Wichita Falls Texas, and self-employed
as consultant and oil producer back to Denver until marriage and house
acquisition
dictated local registration. After that the business pressures made it
questionable
that at any election I probably would be out in the field and unable to
vote, which
was unacceptable. So the absentee was deemed mandatory.
In 1986 on my return to Tulsa I was shocked to find at the first
election here
the inside envelope instructions on the back were heavily printed in BOTH
English
and Spanish. This was quite unacceptable to me, knowing that one of the
requirements for naturalization to citizenship was the ability to read,
write, speak
and understand the English language, as spoken in the USA. It was not long
before
contact was made with legislators and party local headquarters questioning
the
dual language. Some of my efforts such as this one have referred to the
subject
with increasing firmness.
To my complete, and satisfying, surprise, in this one the inside
envelope, the
one into which the marked ballots go, then it into the notarized one, then
all into
the actual mailing envelope the instructions were ONLY in English. Finally
someone woke up to the wastefulness and ignorance of having the foreign
language
instructions present. I would expect that there was a certain added cost to
the dual
set also. Whoever was responsible for the change has earned my most sincere
compliments and a "Well Done".
That is the good part!! On the downside, the 'politics of personal
destruction'
have shown up again in these campaigns, most heavily in the District One
Congressional campaign. Neither candidate was my first choice, or second,
but
my mantra remains the same: those who resort to such do not deserve, or
receive,
my vote as this is abhorrent to say the least, particularly in intra-party
campaigns,
(Primary & Run-off). Here the label for such tactics must become "RINO"
(Republican in name only). Where is the civility or dignity that should be
shown?
Further, in arriving at a decision for whom to vote my interest is in what a
candidate
plans to do, if elected, and what her/his stands are on the main issues.
Thus my
decision was easy and my ballots should already be in the office of the
Election
Board.
Unfortunately there are certain 'campaign consultants' who regularly
resort to
such sleazy tactics and the majority of individuals active in the party
processes have
become aware of the guilty parties. It is too bad that the Party officials
do not take
a more aggressive stance to advise and warn, especially new, candidates not
to use
them. Also, some of these offensive tactics are often paid for by
associations not
'officially' connected with the candidate boosted, so-called 'dark money' on
which
there are no limits on donations received.
Unfortunately the State Ethics Commission seems to be unresponsive,
or not
interested, in taking action against the guilty parties even in the general
election
campaigns. The Legislature could and should take some corrective action
there,
even including replacing the commission personnel not carrying out the
assigned
duties. Or perhaps there is an individual bias there? It is my understanding
that there
is statute or rules that require a disclosure statement on electronic
advertisements
and a printed disclosure on print fliers. Sometimes it has been my
observation that if
present they are very well hidden with minute size font and sometimes white
on white
or black on black or other color on color to mask the disclosure. In earlier
years the
disclosure included the name and address or phone number of a contact
person, but
not lately.
The whole problem boils down to a semblance of dignity and civility
on the
individual's part now sadly lacking in most of the political activities.
Perhaps bringing
GOD back into our lives as a nation would serve to correct the situation.
PRESDT-45 seems to be trying, to his credit!!

VIEW FROM HERE
By Bob McDowell (Born Neil Carson)
Number 18-33
POOR LEGISLATIVE RECORD Week of
2018/08/13
In Oklahoma City there is a, basically Republican, quarterly
newspaper,
Oklahoma Constitution, that each year in the Summer issue following the
annual
Session of the Legislature publishes a summary of the individual voting
records of
each of the 48 Senators and 101 Representatives. The record is of their
votes on
ten of the bills making it through to law chosen from a list of suggestions
by the
readerships submitted to the membership of OCPAC (Oklahoma Conservative
Political Action Committee) for selection. Some bills (4) have a 'Yes' vote
considered 'Conservative while 6 were considered 'Liberal' this year. The
member receives 10 points for a 'Yes' vote, 3 for missing a vote, and zero
for a
'Liberal' vote. In my opinion, this arrives at the easiest way to evaluate
the
members' service.
The paper lists the members in each house alphabetically and shows
name,
city, missed votes, liberal votes, current year record, and cumulative
record.
Thus first year 'freshmen' members' records will be the same. For the last
few
years it has been my policy to re-sort the lists according to voting record
in
current session followed by cumulative record. This makes it easier to track
the
progress, or decline, of individual members. Frankly, without computer to '
cut&paste' it would be practically impossible to do this re-sort. It seems
to me
that it might be easier to track records if the number of 'Yes' votes were
included in the presentation and, hopefully, will be added by me next year
in my
2019 re-sort. The re-sort only includes the Republicans with the addition of
the
most conservative recorded Democrat shown for comparison purposes.
This year Senator Nathan Dahm, Broken Arrow, again leads in the
Senate
with a solid '100' record, followed closely by Anthony Sykes, Moore, with a
93, having missed one vote. If you approve and are one of either of their
constituents approving, it would be well to call either or their office and
so state.
Until January of 2015 there was a toll-free number for the Senate when it
was,
surprisingly, disconnected. The highest rated Democrat was Randy Bass,
Lawton,
with a 49 rating placing him nineteenth of 48 in the Senate. Some overall
improvement over 2017 was noticed, but still is somewhat lower than previous
years. 'Tail-end charley' again was Ervin Yen, OKC, with a miserable 13,
meaning 1 conservative and 1 missed vote.
Turning to the House we find two with 100 records: Jason Murphy,
whose
cumulative is also 100, and Tom Gann, Inola. Right up there is Chuck Strohm,
Jenks, at 93, having missed one vote and Sean Roberts, Hominy, and Jeff
Coody,
Grandfield, with one liberal vote each. Top conservative voting Democrat
turned
out to be Johnny Tadlock, Idabel, at 46 and cumulative at 46 or 4
conservative
votes and 2 non-votes. He ranked number 36 of 101 House members. "Tail end
charley" turned out to be Tess Teague, Chocktaw, with a rather poor rating
of 9,
or just 3 missed votes and 7 liberal votes, making her considered for RINO
status, along with probably 30 or 40 above in ratings. For complimenting or
complaining there is a toll-free number for the House of 1-800-522-8502
answered by the House operators who with the member's name will plug you
right through. You will find the 'administrative assistants' in any of their
offices
helpful, friendly, and the "ones who get things done" that you may need,
rather
than bothering the member. At least that has been my experience!!
In my opinion, my own Senator, Nathan Dahm, is the most outstanding
and has my pride in his performance. He is noted as being the ONLY member
of either house the reads EVERY bill or will not vote in favor of it,
regardless.
Unfortunately it appears that far too many are passed out with sufficient
time to
really be able to read each and every one. The same is true for Congress.
And
too many bills are far too wordy, often consisting of up to 1,000 pages. By
comparison, the bill for the 'FairTax' is, if memory serves correct, is no
more
than four pages, if that.
Along that line, the US Constitution can be read in no more than one
hour and is easy to understand, being devoid of 'legalese". Even the first
100
years of Amendments were mostly one sentence. The Oklahoma Constitution
is reported to be the longest of the 50 and is not availble in soft cover
books.
Legislative members from Missouri and Pennsylvania have in the past given me
a copy of their State Constitutions and they are 'soft cover' about one-half
inch thick, and include the US Constitution. Maybe it is time for an
Oklahoma
Constitutional Convention to re-right and reduce to size publish and
distribute!!!

Fw: 18-32: Costly Construction Failures

VIEW FROM HERE
By Bob McDowell (Born Neil Carson)
Number 18-32
COSTLY CONSTRUCTION FAILURES Week of 2018/08/06
It was somewhat bemusing, and concerning to read a headline in the
July 25
daily paper that carried the headline: "Segments of Cimarron buckle from
extreme
heat". The story was datelined 'Oklahoma City' and credited to Barbara
Hoberock of the Tulsa World, so she must be the Capitol reporteret. The
story
begins by saying "Extremely hot temperatures have caused portions of the
Cimarron Turnpike to buckle, the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority was told
Tuesday".
For those not familiar with Oklahoma highways, there are a number
of
turnpikes that have been built since the first, 'Turner Turnpike' was
opened in
the 1950s, to my recollection. The total 'lane miles' is in the several
thousand, a
'lane mile' is one lane of pavement for one mile thus a four lane 100 mile
highway contains 400 'lane miles' of road and in my mind paved shoulders
would be added.
This caught my engineering attention since there are older highways
that
do not seem to have that trouble and have lived through much higher
temperatures,
in the 'dust bowl' era of the 1930s. In fact, it is in my memory of driving
on a
section of old US 66 Southwest of Stroud that my eyes had witnessed being
built
in the 1930s with concrete. One difference was that the concrete was being
mixed 'on site' by a self propelled mixer. It was astounding to feel the
road that
old to be much smoother than the Turner Turnpike we departed at Stroud!! If
memory serves correct, U.S. 66 was the first highway in the nation to be
fully
paved across any state and that was Oklahoma.
In any event the story struck me as furnishing evidence that
something is
missing in the construction of highways in the recent 50 years or so.
Admittedly
trucks are much heavier, but the roads should be constructed so as to carry
the
loads.
Most of the non-toll roads in Oklahoma currently are in poor
condition,
that is something less than 'velvet rides'. In the recent Gubernatorial
Primary one
candidate stressed heavily that he would 'remove the tolls' to allow and
encourage
more business along the roads. There was not a time that I was able to pose
the
question "without the tolls how could they be maintained, since the non-toll
roads
are not kept up to interstate condition now?" Neither did anyone else to my
knowledge.
Another question arises that should be asked to the highway
officials and
engineers is: "If you cannot afford to build roads well enough to withstand
the
use, how can you afford to rebuild, repair, or replace them?" It should be
noted
that major airport runways handling multi-hundred thousand pound aircraft
landing at over 150 miles per hour seem to last far much longer, but the
paving
is as thick as 36" in some, particularly military and international flight
airports.
Also the sub-base for the paving must be well laid and packed in order to
prevent cracking and buckling under stress of weight and weather.
It has been noted that in recent decades the Turnpike Authority has
begun using asphalt as an overlay or replacement paving, which in my
engineering
opinion is more like using a 'band-aid'. Given the normal summer heat in
Oklahoma that is not the best material for the job. It seems that well over
50 years
ago a certain powerful politician was able to achieve rules requiring the
use of
asphalt for road paving. It is known to 'rut and ripple' under loads no
heavier than
a loaded pick-up when stopping or just repeated traffic in the Summer heat.
In short, if roads are built right, with adequate solid base and
drainage and
then maintained properly they should stay in useable condign for many more
years than now experienced. Another weather related detiorating practice is
the
use of SALT in winter months, as it will react adversely with the concrete
and
then will rust the reinforcing rods to destruction. There are other
materials that
will be more effective melters and will not rust the vehicles using the
roads and
streets. Also I have not heard of the environment organizations ever
raising a
fuss over the use of salt for roads like they do for other uses. Maybe those
individuals feel it is more important to them to have the roads salted for
their
convenience than protect the waterways.
In any event all the extra repair/replacement comes at major extra
expense
and thus tax increases and it is my opnion that we are already overtaxed,
particularly those of us in the lower income levels!!
