THE CONSERVATIVE VIEW

BY RUSSELL TURNER

CAST THE FIRST STONE

Over the past week there has been a constant drumbeat from the liberals in this country to impeach President Donald Trump. When they get on one of their rants they sound a whole lot like an old LP record that gets stuck and keeps repeating. The Russia investigation has not given them anything to sink their teeth into; now they are focusing their selective outrage on an alleged affair between our president and a couple of ladies over 10 years ago. I am impressed with the liberal's conversion to the principles of fidelity and Christian values. It wasn't that long ago they had no problem with Bill Clinton having a sexual affair with a white house intern while being in the Oval Office. It wasn't that long ago that in the name of political correctness they would have sacrificed a virgin on the altar of political correctness if they could have found one in Washington DC.

Those of us who voted for Donald Trump always knew that he, just like the rest of us, is far from perfect, but one thing I can say for President Trump is that he has kept more of his campaign promises than any president I have seen in my lifetime. I cannot say that I know what is in Donald Trump's heart that is between him and God. We Americans have accepted the half truths and outright lies for far too long. We have also tolerated leaders who did not have the backbone to tell it like it is. Donald Trump may be a little rough around the edges, but his actions have proven him to be a man of his word. Has Donald Trump broken the Ten Commandments? I can guarantee you that he has; I can also guarantee you that every one of us has also broken some of the commandments. One of the main tenets of the Christian religion is the ability for all of us to be forgiven of our sins if we will be willing to change our way of life and accept the teaching of Christ. Has Trump made that change? I have no way to know that for sure, only he and God know that answer.

In the Bible there is a story where a woman accused of adultery was brought before Christ and the people demanded that he condone her punishment under the law of Moses, that being death by stoning. Their action was what I call a loaded question; Christ's answer was very simple, let you who is without sin cast the first stone. Maybe we should think of that passage when we hear all of the rhetoric about Donald Trump.

BEHIND THE SHOUTS Week of 2018/09/06
It seems like there has been an almost constant barrage of loudly
proclaimed protests from those in the 'left wing' C/S persuasion population to,
among other things, abolish the Electoral College and go to the claimed "more
democratic" popular vote for electing the President. The Electoral College
form of determining the outcome of Presidential elections was put into the
Constitution of the USA by the, in my opinion, GOD inspired wisdom given to
those delegates attending the Constitutional Convention in 1787-88. It assures
that no single or few States can use their population numbers to run roughshod
over the less occupied states. Thus it is known as the REPUBLICAN form of
government. I have been told by supposedly knowledgeable clergy that it
closely mirrors the 'Presbyterian' form of government.
All those of us living in the smaller populated states should be un-
equivocally opposed to any change from our present system of election, other
than seek a more reliable and honest vote casting and counting in the election
boards and precinct judges than seems to be the norm now!! In my own
experience there has been far too much and easy "ballot box stuffing" and it
seems to be increasingly evident. In the 2016 election there were reports of
'more people registered in a precinct than eligible living there' and 'numerous
names on tombstones voting by absentee ballots. This has occurred because,
in my opinion, of the very lax requirements to register and a move to not require
proof of person to cast a ballot.
A recently received Email contained a break-down of the statical reason
for the Electoral College, summarized as best as possible to remain within the
allotted space.
"There are 3,141 counties in the USA. Trump: 3,084; Clinton: 57.
"There are 62 counties in New York State. Trump: 46; Clinton 16.
"Clinton won the USA popular vote by approximately 1.5 million votes.
"In the 5 counties within the City of New York, called 'Burroughs'
Clinton received well over 2 million more votes than Trump. (Clinton won
only 4: Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens). Thus these five counties
alone more than provided the popular vote difference for the entire Nation!!
"These 5 counties contain 239 square miles. The entire USA contains
3,797,000 square miles!! When you have a country that encompasses almost
4 million square miles of territory, it would be ludicrous to even suggest that
the vote of those who inhabit a mere 319 square miles should dictate the
outcome of a national election. Large, densely populated Democrat
(controlled) cities (NYC, Chicago, L.A., etc) DO NOT and SHOULD NOT
speak for the rest of our country! And, it's been verified and documented
that those aforementioned 319 square miles are where the majority of our
nation's problems foment." Thus it seems to me to be quite obvious that we
in "fly over country" MUST be eternally alert, willing and able to rise up and
use our number of states to prevent this proposed theft of our rights and freedoms!!
As written before, my concern is that the postulated break up of the
USA into several nations made up of a few of states could occur in this
Presidential term in order to have any of our 'GOD GIVEN' rights
preserved as the wayward states populations would certainly lose theirs.
Otherwise we could end up in a communist dictatorship on starvation
diets and death at will of the dictators as is occurring in Venezuela, and
did in Cuba!!
The recent primary and run-off elections have indicated to me a
disturbing increase in the downright nastiness that some candidates are
willing to utilize, including totally false statements and doctored
photographs as well as outright lies against opponent candidates,
especially incumbents. It will be necessary for party officials to step in
and publicly remonstrate offending candidates, including party affiliation removal!
How can we be able to trust such candidates to act in an honorable
manner if they campaign thus. It is my unshakable policy to refuse to vote
for ANY candidate resorting to such and if majorities of voters would do
the same it would not take long to get their attention, or remove their
party affiliation.

YEAH, BUT

Over the past several years our country has gotten into a system of selective enforcement of our laws. If a person has the right political contacts it seems like they can get away with anything, while at the same time someone without out those contacts will be fed to the wolves. The case of Paul Manafort is one of the most recent examples. While Mr. Manafort may be guilty of some crimes, we need to remember that he has not been convicted of anything yet; but he has been held in solitary confinement and denied bail for a crime that most people would have been allowed to make bail and not been in solitary confinement. On the other hand, a former presidential candidate and former Secretary of State destroyed subpoenaed records and violated security protocols that could put our nation at risk; those actions are not reported by the main stream news and no one seems to be interested in addressing those crimes. Too many people will say, "Yeah, but she didn't mean it."

Over the weekend the media was ablaze about a tweet that President Trump sent out alluding to the possibility of shutting down the government if Congress failed to pass funding for the border wall. When people cross into our country without our permission it is against the law, that is why it is called illegal immigration. We have laws passed by Congress over several years that are intended to provide a lawful way to enter our country, but we have too many people who are ignoring the current laws we have on the books. It is evident that for those of us who don't have any political favors to be redeemed, the government will throw the book at us. When our system is not doing what it is mandated to do, it is time to shut it down. The average people in this nation elected Donald Trump to solve the illegal invasion that we are experiencing. The people who want to keep the status quo will agree that there are laws against illegal immigration, then they will say, "Yeah, but we feel sorry for them." One group that they do not feel sorry for is the hardworking people of this nation that is paying the bills to fund all of this nonsense and pay their salaries and benefits.

I have seen government shutdowns in the past, while the mainstream media screams that the end of the world is coming I have found that they have little lasting impact. While some condemn Trump's threats about shutting down the government, I say, "Yeah, but it is about time we have some action to solve the problem and stop all of the rhetoric that we have heard over the years that has solved nothing."

VIEW FROM HERE
By Bob McDowell (Born Neil Carson) Number 18-33
POOR LEGISLATIVE RECORD Week of 2018/08/13
In Oklahoma City there is a, basically Republican, quarterly newspaper,
Oklahoma Constitution, that each year in the Summer issue following the annual
Session of the Legislature publishes a summary of the individual voting records
of each of the 48 Senators and 101 Representatives. The record is of their
votes on ten of the bills making it through to law chosen from a list of suggestions
by the readerships submitted to the membership of OCPAC (Oklahoma
Conservative Political Action Committee) for selection. Some bills (4) have a
'Yes' vote considered 'Conservative while 6 were considered 'Liberal' this year.
The member receives 10 points for a 'Yes' vote, 3 for missing a vote, and zero
for a 'Liberal' vote. In my opinion, this arrives at the easiest way to evaluate the
members' service.
The paper lists the members in each house alphabetically and shows name,
city, missed votes, liberal votes, current year record, and cumulative record. Thus
first year 'freshmen' members' records will be the same. For the last few years
it has been my policy to re-sort the lists according to voting record in current
session followed by cumulative record. This makes it easier to track the progress,
or decline, of individual members. Frankly, without computer to 'cut&paste' it
would be practically impossible to do this re-sort. It seems to me that it might be
easier to track records if the number of 'Yes' votes were included in the
presentation and, hopefully, will be added by me next year in my 2019 re-sort.
The re-sort only includes the Republicans with the addition of the most
conservative recorded Democrat shown for comparison purposes.
This year Senator Nathan Dahm, Broken Arrow, again leads in the Senate
with a solid '100' record, followed closely by Anthony Sykes, Moore, with
a 93, having missed one vote. If you approve and are one of either of their
constituents approving, it would be well to call either or their office and so
state. Until January of 2015 there was a toll-free number for the Senate
when it was, surprisingly, disconnected. The highest rated Democrat was
Randy Bass, Lawton, with a 49 rating placing him nineteenth of 48 in the
Senate. Some overall improvement over 2017 was noticed, but still is
somewhat lower than previous years. 'Tail-end charley' again was Ervin
Yen, OKC, with a miserable 13, meaning 1 conservative and 1 missed vote.
Turning to the House we find two with 100 records: Jason Murphy,
whose cumulative is also 100, and Tom Gann, Inola. Right up there is
Chuck Strohm, Jenks, at 93, having missed one vote and Sean Roberts,
Hominy, and Jeff Coody, Grandfield, with one liberal vote each. Top
conservative voting Democrat turned out to be Johnny Tadlock, Idabel,
at 46 and cumulative at 46 or 4 conservative votes and 2 non-votes.
He ranked number 36 of 101 House members. "Tail end charley" turned
out to be Tess Teague, Chocktaw, with a rather poor rating of 9, or just
3 missed votes and 7 liberal votes, making her considered for RINO
status, along with probably 30 or 40 above in ratings. For complimenting
or complaining there is a toll-free number for the House of 1-800-522-
8502 answered by the House operators who with the member's name
will plug you right through. You will find the 'administrative assistants' in
any of their offices helpful, friendly, and the "ones who get things done"
that you may need, rather than bothering the member. At least that has
been my experience!!
In my opinion, my own Senator, Nathan Dahm, is the most
outstanding and has my pride in his performance. He is noted as being
the ONLY member of either house the reads EVERY bill or will not
vote in favor of it, regardless. Unfortunately it appears that far too
many are passed out with sufficient time to really be able to read each
and every one. The same is true for Congress. And too many bills are
far too wordy, often consisting of up to 1,000 pages. By comparison,
the bill for the 'FairTax' is, if memory serves correct, is no more than
four pages, if that.
Along that line, the US Constitution can be read in no more than
one hour and is easy to understand, being devoid of 'legalese". Even
the first 100 years of Amendments were mostly one sentence. The
Oklahoma Constitution is reported to be the longest of the 50 and is
not availble in soft cover books. Legislative members from Missouri
and Pennsylvania have in the past given me a copy of their State
Constitutions and they are 'soft cover' about one-half inch thick, and
include the US Constitution. Maybe it is time for an Oklahoma
Constitutional Convention to re-right and reduce to size publish and
distribute!!!

POST ELECTION THOUGHTS Week of 2018/11/26
As this is written, in normal times six days after a general election the
results are known and final, it seems as though in at least two states the final,
unchangeable results are still up in the air. These, as anyone interested in the
outcomes would know, are Arizona and Florida. And there may be a few other
places that are not so widely published and covered, sometimes untruthfully. It
seems that in two counties in Florida the same election officials are involved in
rather extensive, it is reported, violations of fixed Federal and State election laws,
and were also involved in the 2000 Presidential election. The question in my
mind is: why has nothing been done about the person or persons involved in such
criminal activities?
We must remember that any fraudulent vote reduces the effect and
importance of every legally and properly cast vote. Not that the two states
mentioned are not the ONLY places where there is, and has been, vote fraud.
In my own personal experience as a Republican County Chairman from 1999 to
2003 such carrying on came to my attention. In the 2000 election at least three
couples complained that they were not allowed to vote even though they had
moved into the area at least a year earlier and filed their registration applications.
My report to State Party headquarters received prompt action with the State
Election Board where it was reported back to me that on one of the desks there
was found a stack of registration applications several inches tall that had not been
processed. All were for Republican voters according to the report!! That was
while the State of Oklahoma was totally in control of the Democrat Party, since
statehood in 1907!!
It seems to me that these things are indicative of a failure on the part of law
enforcement, including the prosecutors, to carry out their sworn duties, and
probably some courts may be complaisant. In any event in elections where there
are federal offices involved the US Attorney is authorized and should take action,
but only when complaints are filed. Unfortunately, all involved are human and
subject to such frailities, which does not release them from a share of the blame!!
Hopefully, the problem races will be honestly resolved, but there is no assurance
in my mind.
Given that this is to appear the last week in November, a much more
important and solemn event will have just occurred, and that is the annual 'fourth
Thursday' when our Nation has it's pause to offer thanks to GOD for the
manifold blessings HE has showered on the United States of America. It should
be remembered that the USA was founded as a Christian based Nation, but one
where all faiths should be accepted and the practice of them protected
PROVIDED that they respect and allow free practice of the Christian Faith
in its multiple forms of practice. Unfortunately we have a few such, that in my
opinion are as much or more a political movement as a 'true' religious faith based
entity. It seems to me that when an organization mandates that those in
disagreement with them, or of different beliefs, must be 'converted, enslaved, or
killed they are in the wrong place in a "representative REPUBLIC" such as was
established in the USA in the 1790s.
The GOD of Jewry and Christianity is practiced here by the vast majority
of the LEGAL population and those practicing deceit or violence to attain their
goals need to return to those nations where their kind is in control, or be
peacefully returned by the authorities.

COSTLY CONSTRUCTION FAILURES Week of 2018/08/06
It was somewhat bemusing, and concerning to read a headline in the July
25 daily paper that carried the headline: "Segments of Cimarron buckle from
extreme heat". The story was datelined 'Oklahoma City' and credited to
Barbara Hoberock of the Tulsa World, so she must be the Capitol reporteret.
The story begins by saying "Extremely hot temperatures have caused portions
of the Cimarron Turnpike to buckle, the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority was
told Tuesday".
For those not familiar with Oklahoma highways, there are a number of
turnpikes that have been built since the first, 'Turner Turnpike' was opened in
the 1950s, to my recollection. The total 'lane miles' is in the several thousand,
a 'lane mile' is one lane of pavement for one mile thus a four lane 100 mile
highway contains 400 'lane miles' of road and in my mind paved shoulders
would be added.
This caught my engineering attention since there are older highways that do
not seem to have that trouble and have lived through much higher temperatures,
in the 'dust bowl' era of the 1930s. In fact, it is in my memory of driving on a
section of old US 66 Southwest of Stroud that my eyes had witnessed being
built in the 1930s with concrete. One difference was that the concrete was
being mixed 'on site' by a self propelled mixer. It was astounding to feel the
road that old to be much smoother than the Turner Turnpike we departed at
Stroud!! If memory serves correct, U.S. 66 was the first highway in the
nation to be fully paved across any state and that was Oklahoma.
In any event the story struck me as furnishing evidence that something
is missing in the construction of highways in the recent 50 years or so.
Admittedly trucks are much heavier, but the roads should be constructed so
as to carry the loads. Most of the non-toll roads in Oklahoma currently are
in poor condition, that is something less than 'velvet rides'. In the recent
Gubernatorial Primary one candidate stressed heavily that he would 'remove
the tolls' to allow and encourage more business along the roads. There was
not a time that I was able to pose the question "without the tolls how could
they be maintained, since the non-toll roads are not kept up to interstate
condition now?" Neither did anyone else to my knowledge.
Another question arises that should be asked to the highway officials
and engineers is: "If you cannot afford to build roads well enough to with-
stand the use, how can you afford to rebuild, repair, or replace them?" It
should be noted that major airport runways handling multi-hundred
thousand pound aircraft landing at over 150 miles per hour seem to last far
much longer, but the paving is as thick as 36" in some, particularly military
and international flight airports. Also the sub-base for the paving must be
well laid and packed in order to prevent cracking and buckling under
stress of weight and weather.
It has been noted that in recent decades the Turnpike Authority has
begun using asphalt as an overlay or replacement paving, which in my
engineering opinion is more like using a 'band-aid'. Given the normal
summer heat in Oklahoma that is not the best material for the job. It
seems that well over 50 years ago a certain powerful politician was
able to achieve rules requiring the use of asphalt for road paving. It is
known to 'rut and ripple' under loads no heavier than a loaded pick-
up when stopping or just repeated traffic in the Summer heat.
In short, if roads are built right, with adequate solid base and
drainage and then maintained properly they should stay in useable
condign for many more years than now experienced. Another
weather related detiorating practice is the use of SALT in winter
months, as it will react adversely with the concrete and then will rust
the reinforcing rods to destruction. There are other materials that will
be more effective melters and will not rust the vehicles using the roads
and streets. Also I have not heard of the environment organizations
ever raising a fuss over the use of salt for roads like they do for other
uses. Maybe those individuals feel it is more important to them to
have the roads salted for their convenience than protect the waterways.
In any event all the extra repair/replacement comes at major
extra expense and thus tax increases and it is my opnion that we are
already overtaxed, particularly those of us in the lower income levels!!
