THE CONSERVATIVE VIEW

THE PLANET OF SOCIALAR
Every day when I get home I like to catch up on the news and see what the current trend is in our nation. As I look at the announced presidential candidates on the Democrat ticket, I have to wonder what planet these people came from; I also wonder why in the world the voters can't see through their rhetoric. Recently I read an article about Sen. Cory Booker (D.-N.J.) who is proposing a plan—the American Opportunity Accounts Act—that he calculates will provide $46,215 to every 18-year-old in the lowest income bracket by giving them annual subsidies in a federally managed savings account.
According to Senator Booker, his bill would help level the wealth-building playing field and ensure that all children—especially those who come from low- and moderate-income families—have a fair shot to reach financial security and prosperity. In my humble opinion his bill is just an attempt to garner votes by promising something for nothing. Already there are countless programs to level the playing field. Have we forgotten food stamps, Medicaid, Affirmative Action, subsidized housing, etc.? Not to mention the so called free education system, in which Americans pay the highest price in the world per child when it comes to education spending. The idea of giving someone a bunch of money to get them out of poverty is lunacy. I have seen people who happen to win a bunch of money at the local casino and very few of them have the discipline to manage the money and use it wisely. Most of the time they will quit their job and go on a spending spree; usually within 6 months they are dead broke and in debt.
Like most people I was not born with a silver spoon in my mouth and, while I am far from rich, I do have the ability to pay my bills for the necessities of life. I was taught from a very early age that the world does not owe you anything, and if you want to better yourself you must have the desire to do it yourself and not rely upon anyone or the government to do it for you. The main thing is having the willingness to get your lazy butt out of bed in the morning, be to work on time, and be willing to give your employer a day's work for a day's pay.
Too many of our citizens have bought into the idea of entitlement; politicians like Cory Booker are destroying our nation bit by bit every time they pass these kinds of bills. He and his kind think that all they have to do is to pass more taxes on the rich and redistribute it and all of our ills will be cured. What they fail to understand is in today's world money is fluid. The rich can take their money to many places on the globe where it can be invested without the heavy hand of government continually reaching for more.
Earlier in this column I stated that I wondered what planet these jokers come from. Maybe it is the planet of Socialar and they have an outpost in South America in the nation of Venezuela. You know that is the place with abundant natural resources, but the citizens are starving and so poor they can't even buy toilet paper. In my opinion socialism by Booker is something we do not need in America.
